When you live and breathe CAT, you will find a lot of avenues to learn from . Today's end-game in Mindsport was a classic problem to learn and consolidate fundas about Time Speed and Distance.
The problem goes as follows: A person starts from hill top A, goes downhill, then along a plain and finally climbs to hill top B. He takes a total of 4 hours for the jouney travelling downhill @72kmph, on plains @63kmph and uphill @56kmph. However while returning back, from B to A, he takes 4 hours 40 mins with speeds being same. Find distance AB. For original text visit www.mindsport.org or check out todays Sunday Times of India (24 Sep 2006)
Now this is not a problem for those who are not very strong in TSD. But those of you who really relish TSD and want to check if your fundas are clear, try it.
The goal is not to solve the problem in less than 2 minutes. But the goal should be to strive at it and then increase our understanding of the concepts. So grab your pen and paper and give it a good shot (10 to 15 min dedicated time). Come back here later to see how one problem can help us learn many fundas of TSD and also the directions of thinking while solving a problem.
The answer is 273 km, if you need confirmation.
